Description
Raymond, ME- Dielectric has been selected by WHUR-FM, a top-rated commercial urban FM station, owned by The Howard University in Washington, DC, to design and install their transmission equipment to permit broadcasting in High Definition FM. As a part of a long-range plan of facility improvement, WHUR-FM's General Manager Millard "Jim" Watkins was joined by both FCC and local government dignitaries to make the switch to HD-Radio. The upgrade includes conversion to a multiplexed Dielectric DCBR (Cavity Backed Radiator) panel antenna and combiner. The combiner permits three Washington-market stations to share the improved coverage benefits of the panel antenna as they broadcast from a common tower location. WHUR-FM is joined by Clear Channel's WASH-FM and ABC/Disney's WRQX-FM in broadcasting from this new system. WHUR-FM transmits in HD-Radio using low-level combining, where the digital HD signal is combined with the traditional analog signal at the exciter level. This combined analog/HD signal is then fed into a Dielectric constant impedance combiner, where it joins the two other FM signals and is fed to the antenna. In addition to investing in cutting edge HD-Radio transmission technology, this is the first low-level combined HD signal that is passed through a Dielectric combiner and into a common antenna. This marks another milestone in Dielectric Communications commitment to HD-Radio technology. Dielectric's series of fixed-iris combiners provides WHUR with the stability needed to prevent interaction with the other two FM signals. Dielectric's fixed-iris design, standard on all the company's high power FM combiner designs, is exceptionally stable, which minimizes the operational problems associated with temperature changes; and ensures an adequate passband to accommodate the HD-Radio signal. Many Dielectric Communications broadcast combiner systems are in use worldwide; however, this is the first application of the Dielectric constant impedance combiner in an HD-Radio application. The HD-ready DCBR panel antenna, and HD-ready constant impedance and branch combiners join the Dielectric family of HD-Radio products which include High Level HD Combiners, Filters, and Interleaved Antennas.
