Building a Pipeline of Qualified Candidates

Using technology to find candidates and get referrals

Finding qualified candidates when you need them can be challenging at times, yet there are solutions that can help make the most of your efforts. One of those is building a strong candidate pool. But how do you find enough great candidates to fill that pool? Today's technologies are an asset in this area, especially when it comes to finding passive candidates, those not actively looking, but who have the distinct qualities you need.

One technological advantage for recruiting is to use Internet mining tools or online networking resources. Online networking tools are used by professionals to connect with each other, but you can use the same resources to connect with potential candidates. Lou Adler, CEO of The Adler Group says online tools are perfect for sourcing more qualified candidates. He notes in an ERE article, Sourcing in the Sweet Spot, "My favorites are ZoomInfo and LinkedIn. These are all you need to hire anyone – if you can get the person on the phone and get referrals. ZoomInfo has just released an email blaster, which is also pretty neat."

Tips from the Experts

How to Work a Cold List
By Lou Adler, Recruiting Guru
and President of The Adler Group

There are plenty of great names on ZoomInfo, but that doesn't mean you should call them all. Time spent calling people you don't know and asking them to evaluate a new opportunity takes a great deal of skill and effort and time. You can maximize your results if you follow these two rules:

1. Minimize your calls to unworthy people.
2. Don't ask any questions that can be answered by a no.

A worthy person is someone who is either qualified and interested in your open opportunity, or knows someone who is. When calling off a cold list of names coupled with just the company name and the title it usually takes five to ten calls before you find a worthy person. Generally only one out of ten of these worthy people is a qualified candidate you can present to your hiring manager. This means you need to call 50-100 people to get one candidate! At 15 minutes per call this is 750-1500 minutes or 12 to 25 hours.

JobCast Best Practices
Creating a Great Subject Line
JobCast offers a default subject line of Job Opportunity: along with the position, but you can feel free to customize your subject lines to inspire your recipients to open the email and absorb your message.
Be relevant and honest! Leaving the recipient in suspense can be a good strategy (Would you like to be a Project Manager for a Fortune 100 software firm?) while being obscure could cause the recipient to delete the email without reading it (Would you like a new job?). If you want to recruit talented finance professionals, why not use a subject line of I want to recruit talented finance professionals?
If you would like to dive deeper and view some more information on effective subject lines, you can go here for a study on best and worst subject lines.
